About US:
Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is a not-for-profit charitable NGO established in 1993 with the vision “Palliative Care for all in need in Africa.” HAU is registered by Uganda’s NGO Bureau and is a licensed private not-for-profit (PNFP) health facility registered by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council (UMDPC).
The three pillars of HAU:
- To provide an affordable and culturally appropriate clinical service to patients suffering from
- Cancer, HIV/AIDS, and/ or other life-threatening illnesses
- To offer education in Palliative Care to health and non-health professionals
- To support the spread of Palliative Care to other African countries
HAU has three clinical sites: Hospice Kampala, Mobile Hospice Mbarara and Little Hospice Hoima. HAU promotes modern methods of pain and symptom control as well as holistic-centered care for patients and families living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other life-threatening conditions. HAU owns the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA) which is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to offer short certificate courses, diplomas, bachelors, and post graduate diplomas and masters in palliative care. HAU also offers training and support to palliative care “initiators” throughout Africa through its International Programs division.
HAU wishes to recruit a dynamic, skilled, and caring professional committed to palliative care to fill the following position:
Title: Executive Director
Location: Makindye – Kampala
Job Purpose: The Executive Director is the public, integrating presence for Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) within Uganda and beyond, representing HAU in the wider palliative care network. Directs HAU policy, internal, and external affairs through dynamic and compassionate leadership. Works closely with HAU’s Senior Management Team to lead HAU staff team and its committed volunteer network. Represents Hospice Africa Uganda with Ugandan and international NGOs, government, funders, and other stakeholders. Ensures HAU services and training are relevant to African culture and economy and are inclusive of all in need. Works for the continuity of the vision, mission, and ethos of HAU. Provides sound financial direction, ensuring a secure, sustainable future for HAU. Reports to the HAU Board of Directors (BOD) and collaborates with overseas partner boards.

Specific Responsibilities:
- Responsible for overall leadership, management, and promotion of HAU.
- Provides strategic, mission-driven leadership for current programs and operations and implements new initiatives as needed, monitoring and reporting on progress.
- Leads a high performing, collaborative HAU team that embraces HAU mission, values, and principles.
- Ensures strong financial systems and oversight, efficient operations, and compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Oversees effective fundraising strategies to maintain current activities, expand programs, and build long-term sustainability.
- Represents and promotes HAU locally and internationally with relevant entities in government, private and nonprofit sectors, current and potential funders, and the media.
- Engages in an ongoing productive working relationship with the Board of HAU and overseas Hospice Africa boards.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Minimum Requirements:
- Advanced degree and experience in Public Health or Medicine, combined with Management, Business Administration, International Relations, Marketing, or any other relevant field. Background and training in palliative care a plus.
- Good track record in senior program management in a nonprofit organization, preferably in public health (palliative care a plus).
- At least five years of professional experience in a leadership role, with demonstrated success in collaborative team management; liaising with boards, government, funders, and varied stakeholders; fundraising; and managing budgets for organisations with multiple programs and funding streams.
