Ndejje University won the first gold medals from the ongoing 9th Eastern Africa University games at the Uganda Christian University (UCU) main campus in Mukono.
The 3 medals are all from the wood ball sport (in the doubles and mixed doubles categories).
Bruno Bbossa and Joel Adupa combined to garner 113 strokes and win the men’s double gold ahead of Collins Kamoga and Denis Ssekidde (also from the same university).
Uganda Christian University’s Abednego Okello combined with Emmanuel Ayebazibwe, tallying 123 to take silver.
Ndejje University also won gold in the women’s doubles.
Joan Mukoova and Victoria Nankabirwa tallied 131 to take gold. Ndejje also scooped silver before Bishop Stuart University took bronze.
In the mixed doubles, Ronald Kawumba and Lillian Zawedde returned 109, taking gold beating compatriots, Ephraim Kasooba and Ruth Scovia from the same university.
Busoga University’s Maurice Kagumaba and Ruth Nakidolo won bronze with 130 strokes.
Athletics started on Thursday 18th December 2014 with Kenya winning the women’s 5000M race.
Lydia Chekumi of Moi University ran 17:32:02 to take gold with Kenyatta University’s Faith Keitanyi taking silver with 17:53:00.
Bugema Univesity’s Lillian Anzazi took bronze after posting 19:22:62.
The main center of attraction was the men’s 10,000M when Bugema University’s Joshua Cheptegei ran 29:20:90 to take gold.
Mount Kenya University has scooped silver after Mark Lokwanamoi posted 30:46:26 to beat Ndejje University’s Sadik Bahati (30:54:04).
Kampala International University picked two gold medals from the Karate event followed by Ndejje University
Hockey kicked off at the Lugogo Stadium. United States International University (USIU) whipped, KISII 4-0.
Maseno University held USIU in a goal less affair before another all Kenyan affair involving Strathmore and Jomo Kenyatta Universities ended in a goalless draw.
Eldoret University and Makerere University played to another goal-less draw.
Basketball continued with Kyambogo University winning by 8 baskets in their 38-30 over Mountains of the Moon University.
University of Rwanda overcame Jomo Kenyatta 43-31 whilst hosts UCU were 39-36 victors over KIU.
In men’s football, Kampala International University (KIU) walloped Tanzania’s Masinde Muliro 6:0. Emma Waiswa with a brace, Bright Haguma, Fahad Muhammad, Bashir Babu and Ibra Munywangi with the others.
Joseph Ocaya’s 2 goals helped Kyambogo overcome Canzibar University.
Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) lost to Kenya’s Mzumbe 0:3, while Nkumba University’s encounter with Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi ended scoreless.
In Women’s football, hosts UCU were held by Eldoret University 1:1 while Kyambogo University were 3:0 winners over Methodist.
Rugby had strong victories for holders, Makerere University. Makerere beat Kyambogo 24-7, overcame Kenyatta University 42-0 before edging Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi 26-0.
43 universities are taking part in the 9th Eastern Africa University games at Uganda Christian University, Mukono. The games end on Sunday 21st December 2014.
