Djamel Belmadi replaces Rabah Madjer as Algerian head coach

Algeria have appointed former midfielder Djamel Belmadi as their new head coach.

Former Manchester City and Southampton midfielder Djamel Belmadi has been appointed the new Algeria head coach, according to the Algerian Football Federation (FAF).

Algeria have appointed former international Djamel Belmadi as their new national coach

The 42-year-old and former Algeria captain is said to have agreed three year contract that runs until the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

Belmadi succeeds Rabah Madjer, who was sacked  later in June.

Belmadi becomes the seventh coach of Algeria since they reached the second round of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

With French blood, Belmadi, 42, played for Algeria between 2000 and 2004, including a quarter-final place at the 2004 African Nations Cup finals.

Belmadi comes in having coached Lekhwiya, now known as Al-Duhail, and the Qatar national team.

He then returned to Al-Duhail and won back-to-back Qatar Stars League titles before leaving his post this year.

Algeria, who failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, begin qualifying duties for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations against The Gambia in September  2018.
