In a historic and momentous event, Dinah Wambi, a third-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student, was officially sworn in as the second female Guild Prime Minister of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Jinja campus.
The handover ceremony, held on July 17 at Difrika Country Resort in Ntinda Zone, Nakibizzi in Njeru municipality Buikwe district, was a vibrant and ceremonious event. Wambi won the highly contested three-horse race with 167 votes, outpacing Musa Kalikolaki, who garnered 140 votes, and Jovia Naluyima, who secured 102 votes.
Wambi’s election on May 5, 2024, marked a significant milestone for the institution, which continues to champion gender equality and student leadership.
The swearing-in was conducted by Counsel Wilberforce Bwambale in accordance with Article 88 of the amended 2023 Guild Constitution. The event was a testament to the democratic principles upheld by the institution, ensuring a smooth transition of power.
Reflecting on a Legacy
The outgoing Prime Minister, Rev. Pastor Emmanuel Kireri, expressed his gratitude to Jesus and reflected on his tenure, highlighting key achievements such as the acquisition of 30 functional computers and the extension of WiFi services for students.
He urged Wambi to continue advocating for a tuition waiver for the Prime Minister and emphasized the importance of adhering to standard operating procedures, securing guild funds, and making informed decisions.
Kireri advised his successor to maintain transparency with students, particularly regarding the delay in guild funds, and to always offer timely explanations to avoid misunderstandings.
Vision for the Future
Dinah Wambi, the newly sworn-in Prime Minister, expressed her gratitude to the administration for facilitating a peaceful and democratic election process. She commended her predecessor for his exemplary leadership and vowed to continue building on the foundation laid by the previous administration.
Challenges and Opportunities
Norman Batwawula, the Dean of Students, highlighted the need for guild officials to fully utilize the financial and legal officers to prevent his office from being overwhelmed with issues that could be handled by these officers.
Guest speaker SP James Mubi praised Dr. Veronica Mukyala and her team for fostering a conducive environment for students and preparing them to tackle real-world challenges.
He urged the new leadership to avoid self-serving interests and emphasized that true leaders should serve with compassion and dedication.
Keynote Address
Dr. Moses Kisubi, the Deputy Director, delivered the keynote message on behalf of Dr. Veronica Mukyala, the Director of MUBS Jinja campus. Dr. Mukyala praised the outgoing leadership for their accountability and proactive approach. She expressed confidence in Dinah Wambi, stating that her leadership, coupled with Mukyala’s own, bodes well for the future.
“You are not leaders by titles but are here to provide solutions to problems. If you can’t solve problems, then you will be a misfortune to your voters,” Dr. Mukyala asserted.
Dr. Mukyala also announced the decentralization of guild trainings, set to commence on July 22, and commended security personnel, particularly Afande James Mubi, for their people-oriented and accountable approach.
