Job Summary:

  • A member of the country management committee who leads the Credit function and defines the strategic objectives to support the Absa Bank Uganda business and setting its direction in line with the Group strategy.
  • Credit executive representative on the country management committee; Board Credit and Board Audit committees.
  • Accountable for ensuring the right people, processes, policies, systems are in place to achieve cost effective and efficient credit management within the country that is aligned to the strategic objectives and Group Risk Target Operating Model
  • Leads and drives the performance of direct reports and creates an environment when all individuals are developed to the best of their ability ensuring talent and underperformance are proactively managed.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • A member of the country management committee who leads the Credit function and defines the strategic objectives to support the Absa Bank Uganda business and setting its direction in line with the Group strategy.
  • Credit executive representative on the country management committee; Board Credit and Board Audit committees.

  • Leads and drives the performance of direct reports and creates an environment when all individuals are developed to the best of their ability ensuring talent and underperformance are proactively managed.

Strategy Formulation & Execution (20%)

  • Contributes to the Absa Bank Uganda strategy formulation to ensure that the bank achieves its short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals in relation to Credit management
  • Formulates the function objectives in alignment to the overall Bank’s goals and in collaboration with the leadership teams for Retail Credit, Wholesale Credit and Business Support and Recoveries.
  • Monitors team and individual execution against agreed targets and key performance indicators
  • Provides reports on productivity and other agreed performance indicators to senior management on a regular basis.

Credit Risk Management (20%)

  • As a voting member of Credit Committees, makes lending decisions for Wholesale and Retail transactions – exercising personal judgment in the evaluation and approval/decline of credit proposals in accordance with credit appetite and policy.
  • Oversight responsibility for personal & team adherence to governance, compliance and lending portfolio controls. Ensuring conformance to policy and procedures.
  • Responsible for the data integrity of country information used to manage & monitor credit risk.
  • Ensuring effective management of Country & Sovereign risk that is responsive and adaptable to country crisis situations.
  • Delivering within an agreed Retail & Wholesale impairment budget, ensuring that the agreed asset quality of the portfolios is maintained in line with agreed risk appetite.
  • Drives an environment of added value where everything is done to add value to every proposition and in everything the teams do.
  • Management of the distressed Assets Portfolio through Business Recoveries and Collections unit

People Management (20%)

  • Coaches, mentors and manages team members towards driving business objectives and ensuring colleague development.
  • Embeds the values and behaviors that reinforce the achievement of the function’s objectives and Bank’s strategy.
  • Maintains a succession plan for the critical roles in the function in line with the talent management process.
  • Determines the Credit learning needs and future skills of the function working in collaboration with the Learning, Leadership and Talent Head and function’s leadership team, allocates appropriate budget and monitors execution of agreed development initiatives.
  • Drives the colleague experience for the function, putting in place and executing on plans to enhance experience.
  • Monitors the utilization of annual leave and function’s leave liability working with the function’s leadership team
  • Drives the development of credit specialization to build in-house expertise that can be efficiently transferred across Africa
  • Sets challenging objectives and ensures effective performance development for the team.
  • Maintains excellent relations with in-country leadership and across the wider Africa Risk team to enable Absa Uganda to achieve its business goals.
  • Oversees the reward and recognition programs and decisions for the function

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

The applicant for the ABSA Bank Credit Director job must hold a Bachelor`s Degrees and Advanced Diplomas: Business, Commerce and Management Studies (Required)
