Emergency Medicine (EM) is an internationally recognised, rapidly expanding and stimulating specialty concentrated upon the urgent initial diagnosis and treatment of acute illness and injury. The Ugandan Ministry of Health (MoH) has prioritised the training and employment of Emergency Care Specialists in each referral and district Hospital as part of a comprehensive plan to improve Emergency Care for the nation. MoH has recognised that the initial management of accidents and emergencies needs to be supervised by Senior doctors and dedicated Emergency Practitioners to improve the outcome of the first few critical hours of a patient’s Emergency treatment. MoH has a national plan to train, recruit and employ Emergency Medicine specialist staff in Hospital and Health Centre IV’s as part of a strategy to improve Emergency Care in Uganda.

The Diploma for Emergency Care Practitioner will have Nurses and Clinical Officers trained and equipped through a two year programme. This Diploma is offered in partnership with Masaka Referral Hospital and with Global Emergency Care Collaborative. The clinical training and education is mainly based at Masaka, including the entire first year of the course. There are 2 specialist modules taught at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in the second year.

The Master of Medicine in Emergency medicine provides students with exposure to a range of clinical experience, particularly in expert patient resuscitation. The three year program will produce clinicians who are good at decision making particularly making an accurate initial diagnosis and deciding initial treatment. The Master’s program will give a wide range of postgraduate experience including Anaesthetics, Adult and Paediatric Medicine, Surgical specialties, Psychiatry, leadership and community training, medical education.

We will train and equip future leaders of the Specialty in Uganda. The pioneer Emergency Medical specialists will be key agents of change who will research and initiate improvements in Emergency Care including the prehospital phase, and the prevention of accidents and acute illness. Competitive and Government scholarships may become available for this program.

Admission Requirements

Master of Medicine in Emergency Medicine (Tuition—1,400,000= per semester, Duration—3 years)

I. MB ChB or its equivalent from a recognised institution

II. Evidence of completion of 1 year of internship

III. Full registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council or sister Councils within East Africa

IV. A current Certificate of Good Standing with the relevant Medical Council

V. A year of post internship experience relevant to Emergency Medicine

VI. Evidence of an excellent general knowledge base of medicine assessed by a pre-course paper.

Diploma in Emergency Medicine (Tuition—727,300= per semester, Duration—2 years)

I. Clinical Officer or Registered Nurse qualification from a recognised institution

II. Evidence of completion of 2 years post-qualification clinical practice

III. Full registration with the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council or Nursing Council, or sister Councils within East Africa

IV. A current Certificate of Good Standing with the relevant Medical Council

V. Three letters of reference/recommendation from either former teachers or professional colleagues

VI. Evidence of an adequate knowledge of clinical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology) which may be further assessed by a pre-course paper.
