Busoga University Law course gets full accreditation

The Dean of Law Faculty, Bamuhamye Edward hands over the accreditation certificate to the vice chancellor, Busoga University Dr. David Kibikyo.

The Law Council Committee on Legal Education and Training has granted an unconditional accreditation to the Faculty of Law of Busoga University. This was contained in a communication delivered by Ms. Margaret Apiny, Secretary, Law Council.

“The committee considered your request and noted that there had been considerable improvement in both the standards and infrastructure as reflected in the inspection report,” Ms. Margaret Apiny said. “The committee therefore resolved to grant an unconditional accreditation to the Faculty of Law of Busoga University.”

It is a prerequisite for any Ugandan university offering the law course to secure Law Council accreditation for its students to be accepted for a postgraduate bar course at the Law Development Centre.

The Bar course is a pre-condition for any law graduate to enroll as an advocate.

The Vice Chancellor of Busoga University, Prof. David Lameck Kibikyo said the university had lost students to other universities due to lack of accreditation and was glad the faculty had finally secured the accreditation.

The church-founded University was founded in 1999, started its law school in 2005 following National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) closure of the Grotius School of Law at Mengo in Kampala.

Busoga’s law programme kicked off with some 24 students it absorbed from Grotius, but it has passed out over 200 students, majority of whom foreigners, especially from Kenya.
