The green consumer event will include activities geared towards conserving the environment especially planting trees on the university’s 30 acres of forest. .
Joshua Busurwa, a lecturer in sustainable development and coordinator of the green consumer initiatives highlighted that the event is in response to government out cry to plant over 10 million trees countrywide in order to recover the country’s declining forest cover.
While addressing the audience present at the launch, Paul Musamali, the National Forestry Authority (NFA) director for planning and policy remarked that forestry contributes 6% of Uganda’s Gross Domestic Products at an estimated sh1000b through provision of both products and services that are important in the fight against poverty.
“To reverse this loss by 2040, we need to restore at least 136,000 hectares annually,” Musamali noted.
Bugema University Vice Chancellor Prof Patrick Manu was also among the ‘chief planters’.
