AKF works in collaboration with partners to develop and promote innovative solutions that help improve the quality of life of communities in areas we work. This is achieved through a systemic and Multi-Input Area Development programming approach that responds to the opportunities and priorities of a given area with long-term and synergised interventions. Specifically in Uganda, AKF currently supports programming in education, early childhood development (ECD) and strengthening civil society.
Job Summary: The Assistant Librarian will deliver and maintain an effective information service appropriate to the needs of all library users.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- To provide front-line library and information services
- To support library users in reference services; develop and maintain libguides with relevant Finks to information sources of specific subjects
- To support library users in retrieving information resources both in print and electronic formats and to facilitate access to bibliographic and full-text databases.
- To receive, process and catalogue books and periodicals
- To maintain and update bibliographic details in the library management system and to update other library databases, including the digital repository.
- To update and implement library policy and procedures in appropriate areas as directed
- Shelving books and maintaining shelf reading for easy location of resources
- To support reader services by registering library users and maintaining their records and user statistics.
- Charging and discharging library resources. Monitoring dues and notification process.
- Identify and facilitate the acquisition of relevant government publications (such as Ministry of Health Publications) and other stakeholders (such as UN and World Bank publications)
- To regularly handle cash relating to charges and fines and collate this with the finance office
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Library & Information Science or equivalent qualification
- At least two to three years of experience
- A good understanding of the work of academic libraries
- Experience of participating in a team, cooperating and contributing when required
- Accuracy and attention to detail
- Good IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office & the intemet
- Sound knowledge of library management systems and a range of library procedures
- Knowledge and skills in supporting research in Evidence-Based Practice and Systematic reviews
- Good interpersonal skills
- Good communication skills
- Good problem-solving skills
- Ability to meet strict deadlines
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
