Apply for Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme 2018

The Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme (UGVS) aims at providing young graduates access to workspaces to gain employability skills is an initiative supported by the Government of Uganda, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and United Nations Volunteer (UNV) Programme.

How Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme Works

In the pilot, the Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme will support the development of labor market intermediation services including job matching, job placement, job readiness training among others. The Scheme will recruit 500 graduate volunteers. Successful candidates will receive a one-week induction training on life, workplace and career development skills. Upon completing the training, the graduate volunteers will be placed in host institutions either in the public sector, private sector or civil society for a period of 12 months.

The scheme will partner with public and private enterprises in Agriculture, Tourism and Hospitality, Finance and Banking, Information Technology, Energy and Minerals, Infrastructure Development including construction, Health and Education and Social Development sectors to provide volunteer placement opportunities in their organizations in different parts of the country.

Benefits

In addition to induction training, volunteers placed with host organizations will receive training on the areas relevant to their work assignments from the host organizations and will be assigned mentors who will provide advice and guide their work throughout the placement period. All volunteers will be regularly visited by the Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme management team to check their progress and offer support. Furthermore, volunteers will receive a moderate monthly stipend from UGVS.

Eligibility

A person is eligible to apply if he/she meets the following criteria:

  • Is a Ugandan national. National identity card shall serve as proof of citizenship.
  • Aged 18 to 35 years;
  • Has a masters’ or bachelors’ degree or diploma or advanced certificate from Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institute. Applicants shall attach certified copies of transcripts and certificates from their tertiary institutions as proof.
  • Has been unemployed, underemployed, or out-of-school and inactive for four years or less after completing masters or bachelors’ degree, or diploma;
  • Produces recommendation letters from either a former lecturer/supervisor or tutor and LCI chairperson.

All Uganda Graduate Volunteer Scheme applicants must fill the application form here and attach the required documents.

Only complete application forms will be considered.

Note: The recruitment process has three stages:

  1. Your application will be reviewed by a selection committee
  2. If your application passes this stage, it will be matched with a possible host institution
  3. If a host institution accepts your profile, you will be invited for an interview
  4. If you pass the interview, you will be given an offer, trained and placed with the host institution.
