I.U.I.U Multimedia Stories - Kampala Campus

An Investigation into the Nature of IUIU Culture at Female’s and Kampala Campuses

Islamic University in Uganda is a university with four branches in the country. The main focus of this investigation is going to be around the female’s campus (IUIU Kabojja) and the mixed non-resident campus (IUIU Kampala campus).

IUIU Female’s campus was established in 2008 as a response to the increasing demand for higher education opportunities for Muslim women in Uganda. While IUIU Kampala campus was started in February 1988 with the aim of producing all-round self-disciplined individuals capable of participating fully in a knowledge technology-based society. When it comes to student experiences in these two campuses it can be broken down into their political and social life without forgetting their academics.

When it comes to the field of politics both campuses are lively and students are very dedicated when it is time to pursue the political career the university can offer. At IUIU female’s campus, the ladies take it upon themselves to became exercising leaders by competing for the office of the GUILD PRESIDENT. The most recent guild elections took place on Wednesday, 19th 2023 with Her Excellence Asiimwe Hibah being voted as the campus Guild President. IUIU Kampala campus voted for their guild president H. E Bayo Abdulwadud on the 29th April 2023.Concidentally, both the guild presidents from both campuses are majoring in Bachelors in Information Technology (BIT) and their vice president in Bachelors of Laws (LLB). From the observation taken, both the campuses guild cabinets are mainly made of law students as the ministers of various ministries.

Socially, especially when it comes to the issue of movements it differs from one campus to another. In IUIU female’s campus, almost 90% of the students are residents so they stay at school. The campus has five halls of residence which include, Sumayah hall, Aisha hall, Fatumah hall, Khadijah hall, and Hafwsa hall. The residents are expected to stay on campus and if they wish to move out then they have to apply for a pass out through the warden’s office. The non-residents have a non-resident identity card that allows them to move in and out whenever they wish. The situation at IUIU Kampala campus is a little different being a non- resident campus, all students can access the campus at any time. The exception lies only with the international students who reside at inside the campus in their hostels.

Concerning the unity of the students in the campuses, there are various clubs in the university to promote unity, strengthen the sense of brotherhood and also kindle the spirit of togetherness amongst the students. The main clubs that boom in these two campuses are the “Nkobazambogo Club that unities the Buganda, Human rights Club for the promotion of human rights and the international students clubs that help them integrate themselves into the society bad them to integrate themselves into the new society and feel welcomed in the new school environment. Dr Madinah gives a brief information analysis of the two campuses.

In addition to the above, IUIU Females campus organizes the annual cultural gala which showcases various traditional performances in the field of music, dance and drama. Through these performances, the students from various tribes from different parts of the country are able to feel the unending tribal ties their origin even if their center of education is found in the central region. Similarly, both campuses organize sports gala that are still aimed for the same purposes of unity, brotherhood and togetherness only with a touch of health dose. The universities prepare a bunch of outdoor and games to fit the various tastes of the students. The outdoor games include, running football, volleyball, basketball and very many. The indoor games include Ludo, playing cards, chess, badminton, table tennis s and among others.

Academically, both the IUIU female’s campus and IUIU Kampala campus have various faculties with the biggest ones being the school of law, school of mass communication and journalism, school of nursing, school of education, business and social works and social administration (SWASA) among others. With the faculty of law being one of the biggest, there is the law society which manages the affairs of the faculty of law as it prepares mock court sessions that helps the students adapt t to being “messengers of the law.” The law society dinner is hosted annually in each campus as a time of swearing in a new incoming law society council and burning off some steam from the extreme pressure of studying. This is an idea that has-been requested by other faculties as one of the best ways to have the university administration appreciate the students hard work, it has also boosted students’ minds. Below are the locations of both campus (IUIU Kampala campus and IUIU female’s campus).

Inconclusion, the experience of female and male students at IUIU is vastly different. While male students have more freedom and enjoy a relaxed environment. The university authorities need to work towards bridging the gender gap and creating an environment that is safe and empowering in order for both campus students to enjoy their educational experience at IUIU. Talk about tuition challenge hence the run. With IUIU female’s campus kabojja being an entirely female’s campus, a lot of care is put into image preservation as they are the mothers of the next generation. IUIU Kampala campus balances out the situation with the male students as apart of student body and having the male students stand for post of Guild President and the ladies as the “Lady Vice”
