AFROSTONE Christian Fellowship sues Makerere University

Makerere University faces court over denying AFROSTONE Christian Fellowship to conduct their worshiping from AFROSTONE halls of residence (Africa and Livingstone halls constitute AFROSTONE).

It is believed that towards the end of previous semester, the university administration received overwhelming complaints from both residents and other students of the university over the inconveniences from the fellowship.

It should be noted that since the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year, the university management decided upon turning some dining halls in the various halls to Lecture rooms.

It is understood that during the course of the semester, the fellowship organizers have been interrupting lectures by making a lot of noise which has prompted the university to take action.

The Organizers of the Afrostone fellowship have thus sued the university using their lawyers M/S BKA Advocates over denial to exercise freedom of worship.

The issue has put the university on tension and has scheduled a meeting with them.

According to Prof. Fred Masagazi Masaazi, the acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration), Makerere University is a secular university which allows every student or member of staff to enjoy their right to practice any religion of their choice.

“Such enjoyment of exercise of right should be done in an organized manner.  It should not be to the inconvenience of other members of the community,” said Masagazi in a letter.

He added: “A meeting has been scheduled for you to interact with some members of university management in an effort to discuss how best the fellowship can operate without inconveniencing other members of the university community.”

The meeting has been scheduled on 15th of July 2015 at 2:00pm in the University Council Room, Main Building.
