Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.
Job Summary: The Accounts Officer is responsible for timely and accurate processing of transactions; preparation of timely and accurate Mobile money payments, journal preparations and reconciliations of Mobile money Wallets as Assigned.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Financial processes
- Verifies the accuracy and authenticity of requests, accountabilities, other support documentations, approvals and support in the Mobile money payments processing and other payment modes.
- Prepares or review monthly journals analyzing financial information used, general ledger accounts, cost centers and project codes for posting in NAV Microsoft Dynamics.
- Review accounting documents to ensure accuracy of information and calculations and make or direct correcting entries. In addition, analyze transactional processes and identify areas where additional accuracies and efficiencies can be achieved
- Carryout monthly closing process and reconciliation of Mobile Money Wallets/ accounts such as Beyonic/Cashbook reconciliations, payable and receivable accounts reconciliations.
- Perform periodic asset verifications, cash counts and stock counts at IDI and/or field offices
- Responds to enquiries and checks accounting transactions to locate and resolve discrepancies.
Financial systems and security
- Identifies internal controls that require improvement and suggests appropriate policy and procedure modifications for improved internal control. Ensures that all financial systems provide adequate audit trail and documentation.
- Ensures that all documents are archived and maintained in a safe and secure manner for the time periods indicated by Finance.
Audits
- Assists the Accountant obtain support documents, prepare analysis of project accounts for IDI’s mainstream and projects specific audits.
- Ensure all paperwork is properly archived at the end of each audit.
- And any other duties as may reasonably be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant business, finance, or international development field
- Professional qualification is an added advantage
- At least two years of experience in similar financial, compliance, and operational role supporting international donor projects
- Experience in financial reporting requirements large
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices, financial reporting standards, financial management processes and procedures
- Demonstrated ability to prepare deliverables, including Quarterly and Annual Progress and Financial Reports, interpersonal skills and ability to solve problems.
- Excellent oral and communication skills and therefore ability to prepare clear concise financial and procurement-related reports
