Jobs – Malaria Program Vector Control Coordinator at Pilgrim Africa

Job Title: Malaria Program Vector Control Coordinator

Pilgrim Africa(PA) is a locally founded and registered Christian non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in Uganda since 2002 with operations in eastern and north eastern Uganda focused on education and public health/malaria, strongly partnered for a decade with a US 501 (c) 3 partner of the same name. PA has three offices: a head office in Kampala and field offices in Soroti and Moroto. Pilgrim’s public health interest centers on the use of integrated vector and medical control for dramatic reduction of malaria transmission in very high burden areas, but also incorporates other aspects of delivery of malaria control interventions to very rural populations. In 2007 and 2008, PA piloted the use of integrated malaria control measures in the districts of Katakwi and Kumi, using proactive medical interventions (both mass drug administration and mass screening and treatment) in concert with indoor residential treat¬ment for vector control. The results were striking (67% reduction in parasitemia, >80% reduction in morbidity, after one round of each), and Pilgrim has since worked in malaria advocacy as well as in operational malaria control.

About PA’s Projects:

Current health/malaria projects include: a Global Fund Round 10 Case Management Training Project currently being implemented in 15 districts, the Katakwi Rotary Malaria Project, an integrated control project aimed at dramatic reduction, to be implemented in H2 2014 in two sub counties of Katakwi – Toroma and Kapujan. Others in the offing are: an operational research project on inno-vative spatial repellants for mosquitos in partnership with Olfactor Laboratories in San Diego, CA, a planned operational research project in Tororo on the impact of co-deploying IRS and Mass Drug Administration (MDA) for reduction of malaria transmission, and an advocacy social media project on Facebook called “Malaria Free Uganda”.
