Job Title:  Gender Coordinator – Uganda Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
 
International Relief & Development has  an upcoming five year $25 million – $75 million USAID Uganda Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Program.  The overall goal of USAID’s WASH program in Uganda is to accelerate sustainable improvement in water and sanitation access and improve hygiene behaviors in the target districts. To accomplish that requires the Contractor to execute tasks which contribute to five distinct outputs:
  • Increase use of improved household sanitation;
  • Strengthen national and district water and sanitation governance;
  • Expand key hygiene behaviors at home, school and health facilities;
  • Improve management of small town water supply and sanitation services.
Job Summary: The WASH Gender Coordinator will ensure that gender is mainstreamed across the program including training materials, monitoring, operations, policies and procedures and design activities that target women and girls within the scope of the project.  The Gender Coordinator must demonstrate exceptional technical experience related to integrating gender into all stages of program activities to increase women’s: access to improved water and sanitation services, inclusion and participation in decision making structures, access to financing and employment and training opportunities in both public and private sector.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Review and provide input to project work plans with attention to gender dimensions and implications of technical activities and operations.
  • Incorporate gender considerations into the Performance Monitoring Plan.
  • Foster close working relationships with gender specialists and others in related organizations and within the Ministry of Gender and Social Development.
  • Maintain an up to date and thorough understanding of gender issues related to project components. 
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant must hold a Master’s degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of eight or more years’ experience working in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector.
  • Eight or more years of experience effectively integrating gender considerations into programming that is not explicitly focused on gender
  • Subject matter expertise in girls’/women’s sanitation concerns, including experience working with school-aged girls and activities surrounding the onset of menses.
  • Significant experience incorporating boys and men into gender-related activities to promote women’s access to and participation in the WASH sector.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the political, social and cultural context of Uganda.
  • Excellent English writing skills and speaking ability.
