President Yoweri Museveni has inaugurated the Teso Zonal Presidential Industrial Hub in Arapai, Soroti City, marking a significant step in Uganda’s youth empowerment drive. The hub, part of a national initiative under the Presidential Skilling Program, aims to equip over 12,000 youths annually with vocational skills to enhance self-reliance and economic integration.

Speaking at the event, President Museveni lauded parents for supporting their children to acquire practical skills. He emphasized the program’s importance in combating unemployment and poverty. “You have seen how useful these courses are. We could have done more for the youth if it weren’t for obstructions by some actors,” he remarked.

Museveni strongly criticized headteachers of government schools for imposing fees, which he said undermines the free education policy under Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE). “The NRM government designed UPE and USE to be free, yet some headteachers reintroduce charges, causing children to drop out,” he said. He vowed to address these challenges, urging parents to hold schools accountable.

The President also revealed plans to diversify the hub’s training programs to match market demands. Proposed additions include spinning and weaving, food processing, ceramics, motor mechanics, and advanced carpentry. “Training should align with market needs. For example, you should learn to make clothes, not just tailor them,” Museveni explained.

Vice President Jessica Alupo praised the initiative, describing it as transformative for the youth. “Your leadership has produced results that speak for themselves, from UPE to these skilling hubs,” she said.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, commended the President for inclusive programs like the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, and the skilling initiatives. “These initiatives are empowering young people and fostering economic growth. Parliament will prioritize funding for such activities,” she assured.

Soroti RCC and hub committee chair, Peter Pex Paak, highlighted the hub’s achievements since its inception in 2023. Over 700 youths have received training in disciplines such as welding, hairdressing, carpentry, and tailoring. He noted that many graduates have established businesses or gained employment.

Graduates shared success stories during the event, receiving financial support from the President to grow their enterprises. Oumo Gabriel from Bukedea received UGX 4 million for his welding business, while Frances Gloria Akareut from Katakwi was awarded UGX 5 million to boost her shoemaking venture.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including State House Comptroller Jane Barekye, MPs, religious leaders, and cultural representatives. The hub has so far graduated 712 youths in Uganda’s Teso region.
