Job Summary:  Under the supervision of the Operations Officer and the WHO Representative, the Logistics Assistant will ensure the smooth flow of work as related to WCO logistics at the WCO. She/he will coordinate actions with other support staff in the team in consultation and collaboration with the Operations Officer.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will work with World Health Organization Health Emergencies (EPR) Cluster and will be deployed in Kampala under close supervision of EPR Cluster Lead, Operations Officer and the WHO Country Representative in the following areas:

  • In compliance with the WHO rules and regulation, based on a comprehensive forecast of the supply needs and in collaboration with the health partners, plan an end to end, timely provision of quality and adequate supplies, equipment and consumables for the health emergency operations.
  • Assists international staff with importations, purchasing and registration of their payment and inventory requirements.
  • Coordinate and monitors office space requirements in liaison with relevant units as required.
  • Facilitate customs clearance, reception, transportation, storage and distribution of supplies to affected areas and populations.
  • Facilitate he set-up of the health facilities supported by WHO, support the appropriate functioning of the health facilities, mobile medical activities such as vaccination campaigns, laboratory support and other emergency health related activities.
  • Provide quality assurance to the set up and sustainable access to adequate, efficient and safe cold chain facilities for a reliable supply of medical items requiring temperature control environment
  • Undertake regular field assessments to monitor supply management, stock movements and storage conditions.
  • Monitor and report daily/weekly to the emergency team, drawing their attention to needs, gaps and problems, and proposing remedial actions. Undertake regular assessments to monitor supply management, stock movements and storage conditions.
  • The incumbent will serve as back up to the team members in similar or different positions within the WCO.
  • Performs other duties as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Essential: The applicant for the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) Logistics Assistant should have completed secondary education with training of general administrative practices with focus on Logistics, Procurement and Travel practices, theories and procedures.
  • Desirable: Training in logistics, supplies/procurement.
  • At least eight (8) years working experience in administrative positions preferably with several years’ experience in the UN and have a sound knowledge of its rules, regulation, procedures and practices as related to the work.
  • Desirable: Experience in Logistic support positions in WHO or another UN agency an asset.

Skills

  • Work requires maintaining up to date knowledge on any changes to the standard operating procedures. The incumbent is also expected to maintain computer skills including skills in Global Management System, to the standard of the Organization by self-study or in-house training.
  • Knowledge of WHO rules, regulations, policies and practices would be an asset.

Remuneration: WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at UGX 82,180,000 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
