Six Excel Vocational Training Institute students in Kalule, Luwero district, were taken to Bombo Military Hospital after drowning while attempting to recover their belongings from the dormitory during a fire outbreak on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire started while the pupils were in class. When the fires were discovered, an alert was sounded, and students rushed to salvage their stuff.
The authorities responded quickly to the event, with police officers arriving at the institute to battle the fire. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported.
Sam Twiineamazima, the acting Savannah Regional police spokesperson, identified five of the six pupils who died as Kakabigwa Patrick, Kavuma Ibra, Ayubu Back, Bukenya Richard, and Sentamu Sulaiman.
The pupils were initially rushed to St. Catherine Clinic and Emmanuel Medical Center in Kalule town for prompt medical attention. However, their health worsened, necessitating their relocation to Bombo Military Hospital for specialized care.
According to preliminary police investigations, the burned-out dormitory was separated into four rooms labelled A through D.
The fire started in room A and spread to the other rooms, causing severe property damage.
