Kiplimo Wins New York City Half Marathon 2023

On Sunday, Uganda long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo won the New York City Half Marathon in the United States.

Kiplimo broke from the group at 15km and battled with Cheptegei and Zouhair up to 18km before he broke off, running to the finishing line.

The reigning World Cross Country Gold Medalist secured the 21 kilometres race victory in 1:1.31 seconds.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo is $20,000 (about UGX. 73,892,680) rich after winning the 16th United Airlines New York City Half Marathon on Sunday, March 19, 2023.

Joshua Cheptegei secured the second position in 1:02.09 seconds while Morroco’s Taibi Zouhair finished third clocking 1:02.18 seconds.

Country-mate Joshua Cheptegei scooped silver with a timing of 1:02:09 to earn $10,000 (at least UGX. 38,000,000).

Kiplimo attributes the victory to the perfect prior preparations in Kapchorwa with his counterpart Cheptegei. It was the first debut for Kiplimo to race at the NYC marathon and win it.

Cheptegei the 10,000 metre Olympic Champion says, although the weather was cold, he persisted to follow his countrymate so as to secure the 2nd position.

“I thank God for the position, in everything you have to give God glory, we have achieved our plan to return home when both of us are shinning”.

He said.

 Kenya’s Hellen Obiri won the women’s category of the New York City Half Marathon with a time of 1:07.21. She was followed by Ethiopia’s Sedeni Teferi and Norway’s Karoline Bjerkell Grovdal. Obiri expressed gratitude for her win and mentioned that it was her first half-marathon in the U.S.

Despite windy conditions, she pushed herself and made a move after 15K to push the pace and ultimately win the race.
