Tumusime Derick is a third year student at Nkumba University studying a degree course in law. He shared his life story, future plans and campus life with The Campus Times and here is the interview.

Date of Birth: 17th December 1991.

Home District: Masindi District.

I attended St. Augustine College Wakiso for my secondary education – From S1 to S6. While in high school, I was the chairperson writers club. I was also prominent in interact as coordinator Rotary Club of Kiwatule.

I read hard and morning prep was not a punishment to me like it used to sound to some of my friends. I never regretted my efforts because I scored 20 points at A ‘level in 2010.

Life at Campus:

After scoring 20 points, I only thought of two courses to study at University. So I applied for Mass Communication at Uganda Christian University (UCU) and Law at Nkumba University. I finally settled for a degree course in Law at Nkumba university where I was admitted in 2011.

During my first year of study, I was a resident student staying in one of the university hostels and everything was provided for by the university in terms of feeding. Life was generally fine.

But for non-resident students, life is not a bed of roses to some. Life is hard and expensive. People think all those who live in Entebbe are well off thus making the cost of living high. But this is not ok and the high cost of living is affecting many students who cannot afford this kind of life.

In high school, dating is prohibited while at campus students are at liberty of doing what feels good for them. You can date, love and marry but I appeal to my fellow students to equally balance relationship with academics.

As a leader and servant:

I was voted Member of Parliament to represent Nkumba Law School to the Guild while in my second year of study.

  • Served as Minister of Sports in 2012
  • Chairperson Banyakitara Students’ Association
  • First chairperson of Uganda Patriotic Students’ Union -Nkumba Chapter.
  • Guild speaker, Nkumba University 2012-2013

Turning Point:

I think joining university has been a turning point in my life. It has shaped my life, understanding and my mindset has equally changed.

Worst moment:

Two of my closest friends lost their parents who were bread winners. Their education future is now at stake. I really feel hurt and sorry for these pals of mine.

Relationship status:

I am still single though eyeing at someone special in my life. I believe she will make me happy as we move on. I will reveal her when the right time comes.

Future plans:

This year should be a breakthrough for Nkumba university students. I am going to help students to achieve this through my dedicated leadership. I’m going to contest as Guild President for Nkumba University 2014/15. And hopefully, we will make it to the Guild top job.
