Self-esteem is an individual’s subjective evaluation of their own worth. It encompasses beliefs about oneself as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame.

In some people it is high while it can be low in others putting them in a situation of distrust and helplessness.

Self-esteem means feeling good about yourself. People with self-esteem feel liked and accepted. They are proud of what they do and believe in themselves.

On the other hand, Low self-esteem is characterized by lack of confidence & feeling badly about oneself. People with low self-esteem feel unlovable, awkward, or incompetent.

In most cases, low self-esteem is caused by bullying, teasing, intimidation, negativity and worsens in victims of crime and violence like rape, defilement, rejection among others.

Every individual should enjoy and actively appreciate life. All success stories have an element of hope and belief in oneself.

Intimidation and negativity can affect one’s mental health, but the good news is, this can be overcome and below is how to fight it.

Write your own story and change it if it unfavorable: People may offer advice or try to define who you are but it is you to sieve out, hold your pen and create your own narrative.

Whenever others say you cannot, it is you to stand your ground and prove them wrong. However, if you inhale all the negativity and intimidation from all angles, you may sink in a pool of low self-esteem and depression.

Expect less, you will never be disappointed: We tend to expect a good treatment from the people around us, when we don’t receive it, we feel less important and abandoned.

Life is not a smooth paths but full of uphills and sometimes mountains. This does not necessarily mean that you won’t get tired on the way but only those who, after realizing the fatigue, take time to energize and raise up again for the journey will be counted among the conquerors.

Parents/Guardians should provide a shoulder to bully victims: A lot happens at the pre-school that can damage a child’s confidence even permanently. This child may not have the power to overcome his fellows bullying and pulling her hair. The parent acts as a savior, establishes cause and works upon it. If it is due to a child’s unkept hair, the mother can ensure that the kid combs before leaving for school.

Attack on a child’s self-esteem can easily be fixed but for youths or adults, it can leave a permanent scar that could be hard to erase.

Imagine a college student bullied for his/her looks, her vision will be impaired and whatever she or he sees in the mirror will be that monster the bullies are always referring too.

Bullying, teasing, intimidation creates a life-long environment of negativity that influences a person’s character, attitude and how s/he sees the world.

“Understand the things you can change and those you cannot and the difference between the two” One of my mentors said.

Sometimes we glue on things we have no control over and forget to focus on our strengths. We end up losers in all fields.

It is at times self-inflicted. A person may have a wound, burn, or mere rash on the face and s/he will imprison her ‘spirit’ into the confines of her/his home to avoid being laughed at. In most cases we give what people to talk about us. No one will laugh at you if your face is proudly raised high and if she or he does and you get a good way of silencing him/her, it will be an addition to your confidence and a damage to the bully. I mean it is a wound, it will go away but not now. What are you going to do about that! “Do your best and leave the results to God”.

Do unto others what you want done to you! In our comfort zones, we laugh and mistreat those in hardships instead of offering counsel and help. When it is our turn, it won’t be any easy. It will be our victims turn to jubilate.

Be yourself, Love yourself: When you stop comparing yourself to the crowd, you will stand out. Focus on who you are, the things that make you happy, your loyalties and principles.

Always remember our environment has a vast impact to our attitude and behavior. Surround yourself with the people who matter and are proud of who you are. Avoid associating with negative-minded people because they will corrupt your abilities.

Good luck…Hold out your candle, let it keep burning!
