Ugandan Team Beats South Africa to Win World University Netball Championship 2018

Uganda University Netball team made a late recovery to upset favourites South Africa in the World University Netball Championship 2018 hosted at Makerere university.

Uganda edged the Spar Proteas 44-43 in the final minutes of the tension packed final at Makerere University’s new indoor facility.

Towering goal shooter Mary Nuba was the day’s heroine as she made the decisive shot that gave Uganda the title.

“I have never felt better. This is the best day of my life,” Nuba, who stands at 6ft 7in stated at the end of the final presided over by the  Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda.

Team Uganda has been training at the MTN Arena in Lugogo and Ndejje University on the outskirts of Kampala city.

Below are some photos of what happened during the games.

At the last edition in 2016, South Africa beat Jamaica 43-39 to win gold. Uganda finished fourth after being beaten to bronze by Australia.

Host nations organise the biennial event together with the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU).

In July, 2012, the first World University Netball Championship was held in Cape Town, South Africa.

The South African Federation of University Sports organised the event.

The World University Netball Championship is a women’s indoor tournament with a maximum of 12 teams competing.

A total of 12 competitors and five officials are allowed per team.
