Chief Justice Bart Katureebe To Head Makerere University School of Law Alumni Association

The Chief Justice (CJ) Bart Magunda Katureebe has accepted a request from theĀ  School of Law community to become the leader of the new Makerere University (MAK) School of Law Alumni Association.

Katureebe announced the commitment yesterday, theĀ  August 8,2018Ā  at the CJā€™s chambers at the High Court in Kampala.

Chief Justice had hosted the Makerere school of law (SOL) organizing committee for the 50th anniversary celebrations due to take place on the 12th October 2018 later this year which will aslo mark the official launch of the association.

The Ag. Principal of the SOL, Dr. Christopher Mbazira posted on the Judiciary Uganda Facebook page confirming the decision to appoint and accord Katureebe the position of Patron and chief guest of the celebration as an alumni to the school.

ā€œMy Lord, the SOL is proud to celebrate your achievement as the first Makerere Alumni to ascend to the high office of the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ugandaā€ he posted.

The CJ also established an Annual Chief Justiceā€™s Day at the school which will avail a a plat form for law students to interact with staff and judicial officers in teaching and mentoring services, in order to promote ā€œlegal education and access to justice in Uganda.ā€

Ā The association will also commission a fundraiser drive for an endowment fund for the law school.
Other activities at the anniversary will include a dinner dance, a studentā€™s moot court competition to be done in partnership with the Supreme Court, public lectures and probonal legal aid open day at the university.

As headĀ fundraiser, Robert Kabushenga, used the opportunity to request the CJ to engage the president with matters of constructing of a new building at the SOL.

ā€œMy Lord, my request is that you help us talk to President Museveni to give us a new building at the SOLā€
