About UEGCL:
Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd was incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act, 2012 on the basis of the Public Enterprises Reform and Divestiture Act, Cap 98 and Electricity Act, Cap 145. UEGCL is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda. UEGCL’s key role is to – carry on the business of electric power generation and sale within Uganda or for export to neighbouring countries; build, operate and maintain Electricity Generation Plants; monitor the operation and maintenance of its Concessioned Assets – Nalubaale and Kiira Power Stations; provide Technical Support as and when required by the Government of the Republic of Uganda through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development; Implement Flagship Hydropower Plant Projects of Karuma (600MW) and Isimba (183MW; organize, support, encourage and maintain training facilities in technical and related fields, amongst others.
Job Summary: The Civil/Geotechnical Engineer- Instrumentation & Monitoring will be expected to gain familiarity with Instrumentation for monitoring Dam safety and underground Tunnels and Caverns stability. The Engineer shall be familiar with installation practice, testing and commissioning of field civil instrumentation such strain gauges, piezometers etc. The job holder will be expected to learn and/or understand field data collection techniques including surveying, geotechnical drilling and sampling, field and laboratory testing instrument installation, calibration and maintenance. He or she will be expected to carry out data analysis assignments on dam structure stability based on data collected by him or given to him and to make reports in formats useful for management decision making.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
· During construction of the power plants and the early phase of employment, the incumbent is expected to participate and perform full-time construction work at the power plant construction sites, duties to include participation in installation and commissioning of civil structure gauges and metering.
· In charge of quantity tracking, daily reporting and regular interaction with project manager, is expected to become familiar with geotechnical and environmental considerations for power plant construction projectsand gain knowledge and understanding of related construction activities
· Carry out field sampling and testing, including collection and logging of field samples; this includes geotechnical drilling, instrumentation monitoring, survey (layout), and visual observation and recording of site conditions
· Perform standard or routine calculations; may input data into and/or run standard or, in some cases, advanced computer programs under supervision; shall include analysis of slope stability, rock fall, deep and shallow foundations etc.
· Expected to develop ability to recognize and understand environmental regulations governing various power plant construction projects.
· Compile and submit information from reports and published documents and under limited supervision, evaluate or analyze the compiled information following standard methods or specific instructions
· Recognize and identify discrepancies in results obtained in such assignments and follow up through a series of related steps or procedures, as directed by more senior personnel; refer unresolved situations and/or activities to the project manager
· Understand and apply safety requirements in the field
· May from time to time be asked to prepare work scope, cost estimates, may perform calculations, gather or review information.
· Will be required to follow all applicable health and safety procedures associated with work environment
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
· The ideal candidate in necessitated to hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering or related engineering field.
· Possession of a Postgraduate training will be an added advantage.
· At least three or more years of working at a Hydropower plant construction site or with a geological survey team, or a civil construction company in similar or related role.
· Past exposure and experience with desktop and industry-specific software including AutoCAD, MicroStation, MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Project are required
· Skills in coordination particularly with subcontractors (such as analytical laboratories and drillers) while performing office assignments
· Ability to assess existing site conditions as a routine and all findings of such work will be reviewed and approved by the project manager or other senior personnel
