Makerere university has closed and students will not report for the new semester as planned.
Makerere university Council resolved to close down the university on 14th August 2013.
The closure follows the ongoing Makerere university staff strike over their 100% salary increment. Lectures recently vowed never to step in class until their demand is worked on.
The council had approved a 100% salary increment to the staff but resources to cater for the salary increment are not available.
However, Makerere University Guild Leaders led by Anna Adeke Ebaju (Guild President) are planning to petition the speaker of Parliament, Hon Rebecca Kadaga, protesting Makerere university closure.
Makerere university council Chairperson, Dr Charles Wana Etyem said that despite the closure of the university, students would not miss out on their lectures.
Adding that the university is going to open and that when it opens, the normal academic year will run for the duration of time the university is meant to run.
